As much as I love all the hard work you put into this place, the fact that you really cared about what choggie might do to his completely incomprehensible comments irritates me.
As I type this, one of our most missed members is in the midst of a flame-out of EPIC proportions. Karaidl is wiping ALL of his submitted content. Videos, Sift talk posts, everything.
What's really more important? That comments no one understood were preserved or that entire discussions be preserved?

I'm sad to see Karaidl delete all of his posts though - we could lock that down as well - but I'd rather not.
All the while more important content could be wiped - entire threads and videos.
Though Choggie did threaten to wreak damage in private chats to me - if he wasn't given his 4th channel "Videodrome".
However I reserve the right to have also, a DELETE ALL. Which will allow me to delete everything I ever put into the site.
Well I'm with Zifnab. Transfer all his videos to Siftbot. We don't need to feast on the dead by scavenging through karaidl's discards.
And Gunny, I understand your objections to the change in comment editing, but I still can't see what the big deal is. I mean no offense; I respect your opinion. Still, I've sometimes written things here that I wish I hadn't, and erasing them wouldn't have made it any better because the damage had already been done. Even when we could change our comments I redacted only a few of my bad ones. I figure that I have to take responsibility for everything I write, both good and bad. When I've written horrible things I've apologized when necessary, but I still let the original words remain unedited in almost all cases, mainly to remind myself that I need to choose my words carefully ALL the time.
Also, I don't think dag and lucky implemented the change to comment editing just so they could oppress choggie. For the life of me I can't see them making a change like that on account of ONE member.
However all of that is tangential to the issue at hand. Please transfer karaidl's videos to Siftbot, dag. I believe it's the best solution, even if it isn't perfect. Shit, we just gotta do the best we can.
We could limit to 5 kills a day.
Karaidl wasn't * killing his videos; he was * discarding them. I don't know if capping kills and/or discards is the solution. This is a really rare instance (first of its kind, as far as I know), so I'd hate to implement a new rule based on such bizarre circumstances.
Also, I believe if you post videos you should be able to discard or kill them any time you want.
I think you should have a time limit on old content that becomes locked into the sift archive.

Necro editing is a serious issue and I think the solution that exist now is excellent. Hell, I would like to see that we never ever could delete anything, because then we have to stand by what we say and post.

As for Necro Editing: Lockdown and put a lid on it now. For better or for worse what work was put in by both are just... needed, for lack of better term. We went through this (sorta) when snake plissken decided to do the same. It's childish: Basically throwing a temper tantrum because mommy wants to leave the toy store.
I wasn't trying to epically flameout or throw a tantrum. Really, I don't have a problem with any of you. I was trying to leave quietly. The problem was I forgot that people browse the recent comments. Whoops.
Anyway, if there was a way to remove my account without touching the videos, I would have done that. Mostly I just wanted my comments and old Sifttalks to go away.
A good chunk of the stuff I've written can be filed under three categories -
1.) Stupid things to say.
2.) Overreacting to something trivial.
-and the most common-
3.) Stuff that I took far too seriously.
I was embarrassed at being a stalker - I was embarrassed at starting a fight over a hairy ass video - I was embarrassed for all my stupid sift talk posts.
If you wanna move my videos to Siftbot, that's great. It's a fair compromise.

Reddit has got a good system. They let you delete your account without touching your comments or posts. That would have been my ideal thing to do.
Also, I'm currently at -686 votes and sitting at rank 58. That can't be right. Sorry, I even screwed up Siftbot.
If he wants to leave let him, our userid's are ALL OVER GOOGLE, and if someone wants to find out something about us, its fairly easy. The ability for us to delete our comments are important and need to be kept available to us.
a * kill limitation is also a poor idea, the content on this site is User Submitted, and if a User no longer wants his posts on this site, he should have the ability to do so.
I don't like the idea of people going through his dead vids, re-sifting them and then have a dupeof called to instantly gain a significant number of votes for work that karaidl did. I really think those videos need to be given to siftbot or somehow preserved on the site.
I can understand the site putting a time limit on editing comments to prevent spam, but maybe after the time limit is up, the edit button should change to 'delete' so you can remove your comment. Better than deleting the whole post, imo.
And I agree these killed posts should go to siftbot.
You're a valued member of the sift. We all appreciate being able to go back and see your contributions that made us laugh, think, etc. Why do you have to take that away from all of us?
If you're embarrased about things you did or said, I suggest this.
Be a man. Grow some balls. Accept yourself for who you are. I've said some pretty stupid things on here before too. This might even be one of them. I don't know.
I'd personally want your account to remain active even after you're dead.
(Same thing for all of us generally editing comments. There's nothing I hate more than having a discussion with someone who keeps editing the things they've already said. NOTHING.)

Also, I don't think there should be a kill switch. I think that this is the sort of thing where you should need to write an email to dag or lucky to have it done.
But I still would like a to pull together a small discourse on necro editing/deleting. Maybe in this thread, maybe in another. We've now see that we need a mechanism that both allows users to leave if they want (sorry to see you go Karaidl) but preserve at least a small part of what they contributed to The Sift.
Bah, turns out that either karaidl is an immature dick or his account is compromised. Either way, the rest of us can sift the videos again. No biggie. We can even dupeof the votes to the new sifts.
I know this is off-topic, but I think a point needs to be made now so that it's perfectly clear:
The *dupeof invocations is only meant to transfer votes from a new video (the dupe) to the old video (the original). It is NOT meant to go the other way. That is, you're not allowed to go through someone's old discards or kills and transfer votes to your new, identical video.
I hope no one has done that yet, and I hope it never happens, because that is not what is was meant for. We only want to reward the original submitter with what rightfully belongs to them, not the copycat. The copycat is already copying. Don't let them steal votes too.

I wish to chime in (for what it's worth) for the idea of someone being able to 'close' their account, and all videos being given to sifty. That person has declared they're done with the content, but the content has discussions and references that other members may still wish to reference. As such, give it to the steward of the site, with perhaps a special no vote state, but still able to be promoted and other such invocations?

Why push for all these changes and then abuse the system by actually using the edit function that is stripped away from comments after a few hours.
It appears that VideoSift has gone the way of larger blogs that feel it necessary to OWN and PROTECT a user-generated content 100%. It appears that I will never be able to delete anything I posted or wrote. I understand keeping it around for SEO, but no text more than a week old is that important. If so, it should be in the FAQ.
Anyways, it would be nice if sites implement these changes to all NEW content, so people know going into it that ALL YOUR PROPERTY belongs to us.
