Unhobbling?

I just noticed UsesProzac has been hobbled by dag 4 days ago for unspecified infractions.

So I go to the FAQ and I find that diamond members and above can hobble someone, and there's no procedure for appeal or unhobbling mentioned, and apparently no need to justify or announce the hobbling to other members.

So basically... wtf? Can I Godwinize this shit right here or is Lucky minutes away from updating the FAQ and allaying my concerns?

The thing is it is total Animal Farm (again).

We have a bizarrely adversarial and counterproductive "Siftquisition" system which is supposed to be "community led" and "open" ... but also some high ranking members can just handcuff you without trial (for reasons of Siftional Security of course, you know, ticking bomb situations only, stuff like that, would you want your wife and kids killed by a crazed Sifter on the loose? Of course not! Think about it! Vote for Proposition Hobble!)

...

Saying "oh don't worry because the senior members won't abuse this privilege" is just gonna explode my Orwellometer, so please don't say that.

spoco2 says...

Mehaps thinks you take this all too darn seriously.

And come on. UsesProzac has been seriously abusive for quite some time, just because YOU don't know what it's all about, doesn't mean that there isn't good reason for it.

Got god's sake, it's a limitation on her abilities for 4 days for being abusive. Get the f*ck over it and stop trying going off at every single thing that you think is some infringement on your rights.

since some of us became da police, we should follow the next logical step and invent lawyers... wait, that's a bad idea. and cops are even worse. so, yeah, fuck it, let's trash the place and move forward

I partially agree with MINK on this one; that's why

As a precaution I guess a backfiring mechanism for this bdsm business couldn't hurt either - say, if gwiz hobbles me on the (unfounded and unfair) basis that I wouldn't want to continue to be his bitch anymore, he is to be circumcized (say, 5% of his star points may be removed). Or do we trust our diamond overlords completely?

Personally, I'd like to see even stricter penalties for improper/unfounded hobbittings imposed but I guess I'm in the minority.

MINK says...

spoco you just exploded my orwellometer. i told you not to do that.

"just because YOU don't know what it's all about, doesn't mean that there isn't good reason for it."

omfg.

listen, i might be "taking this seriously" but that's because i think studying human behaviour in internet communities, and rections to different kinds of authority, is fucking interesting. and the leader of the community has stated repeatedly that part of his reason for starting and continuing the Sift is as a social experiment. He is also completely against authoritarianism, which is why I find it fascinating that he is so strangely authoritarian, or "passive dictatorial" as I like to call it. It is a well known trait of "free" and "open" communities that they have an authoritarian undertone which nobody wants to talk about. Fascinating to see that happening here in microcosm.

just because YOU don't have a clue what i am talking about, doesn't mean that there isn't a good reason for it.

first they came for UsesProzac, and we did nothing.

gwiz665 says...

I only think I've seen you refer to the sift as a social experiment, actually.

But yeah, it is a bit unnerving that any diamond can hobble anyone just like that. Perhaps we should be required to have to write a "reason" for the hobbling, which is posted to the profile page, or maybe we should have a hobbler's corner, so that we can follow any such behavior and police the police, as it were.

don't worry this problem is only about 100000 years old.

Yeah, it was the major flaw in Plato's Republic.

I agree with MINK. I'm probably not as outraged, but the whole thing seems like it deserves an explanation at least. More minor things have been given a talk post, so why shouldn't this? What is going on with this hobbling stuff?

schmawy says...

*quality questions and challenge. I'm pleasantly surprised that there haven't been any abuses (that i've seen) yet. Can you imagine if ol' choggie was still here? He loved to game the system and might have raised some hell.

What's the status on Prozzy now?

Dag explained why he hobbled UsesProzac in her profile.

Dag didn't show his evidence, and UP denied wrongdoing.

you have siftquistions and polls over the most bizarre things, they lead to massive arguments, so now you're just quietly sweeping difficult members under the carpet and posting a little note on their profile?

MINK says...

i totally agree there's a problem with privacy. But i think the process could be slightly less secretive than simply handcuffing someone "on the basis of reliable evidence" and leaving a quiet note on their profile.

and lol i am not outraged, it's just it smells wrong.
