I had to go and check out the video you were talking about. I wish I hadn't.. I have only downvoted one video here during my sifting days, but this surely is a tempting downvote #2. I wil probably have nightmares tonight..

To me, it is not even remotely funny, and I can't even figure out if the guy really looks that hideous, or if he has just false teeth and so on. I do find this video just gross. The only reason why I didn't downvote is that I never would have watched this to begin with.

If I don't like a video, I just don't vote for it, and don't finish watching. I know some people downvote when they don't like something, or don't find it funny when it is obviously meant to be.. I doenvoted a video about 'ugh masturbating monkey and a frog.. So, that was even more gross! And it got LOTS of downvotes. Yet, somehow, it made it to the top 15!

Yes, I have gotten frustrated when a perfectly nice video of mine has gotten a downvote with no explanation. But I know it doesn't mean people are 'policing' the site. It just means they either really did not like it, or were expecting a lot more than what it delivered.

If you are paranoid enough to call this a 'policed site' and scream when people downvote gross videos, then you might just stick with YouTube. Downvoting here does happen, to ALL of us.

I am not a veteran enough here to speak for the community, but sorry, your post just made me angry enough to respond.

Better luck with other videos. I know it is hard to get started here, but it is worth the hard work =)

And when it comes to voting blocks, I belong to none, since I come originally from Finland! The proud country that usually gets 0 votes anyway! =)

That is indeed my video, and I did indeed solicit downvotes for it. It was just a joke from the start. I've NEVER called for a downvote jihad on ANYONE'S videos here except for just one: My own.

I hope that's all you're referring to, and if so then it's just a misunderstanding, which I could see happening to me too if I didn't know all the facts.

Doing your homework before critisizing people is usually a good idea. Oh well, everybody can make mistakes (I should know).

Quite frankly, it got downvoted because it's a god damned terrible video that has no place on the sift.

I also see other videos that I don't think belong here either, but they get onto the front page.

I only downvote videos that I feel are disgusting and denigrating or are downright falsehoods.

So, no downvote for that terrible video, but certainly no upvote either, and I think I would downvote it if I saw it getting close to the 10 vote mark, because it's just a-grade shite.

This site is supposed to be policed by its users, so I can't really sympathize with you on that. The meaning of a downvote is also left up to each member to decide. mintbbb and spoco2 have both stated, above, that they are quite shrewd with their downvotes. At the other end of the spectrum you'll find ant and I. I feel the purpose of VS is to be the cream of the crop and I'll downvote anything and everything that I don't think fits that description.

While it seems what you thought was block-voting was a false alarm, I've come to believe that there are unspoken alliances here. Certain groups of members tend to upvote each others videos without fail, and are often among the first votes cast. Others downvote as a group. I'm sure it's innocent or coincidence a lot of the time, but I'm also sure it's a secret note passed under the table a lot of the time. VS has an ever-growing list of features that promote competition between members and this is exactly why, in my opinion, that's a horrible idea.

Kinda frustrating when you post 3 videos which you think are ok and you fail to make the 10 votes. I had been posting some dam good music videos from irish bands but they all failed to make the cut:(

I rarely downvote and maybe, in the spirit of the sift, I should do so more, but mostly it doesn't really matter to me.

No doubt, everyone believes their own vids are worth at least 10 upvotes and when that doesn't happen, they feel a bit insulted. My personal queue is some of the best ignored vids on the whole damn sift but I'm not complaining. Today.

And I've never downvoted a vid because I'd not want anyone to downvote one of mine. I've had a vid dip into integer territory as far as votes go and...well, no big deal. Move on.
