Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Paid Family Leave

BicycleRepairMan says...

We (Norway) have 10 months 100% PAID leave, and the dad gets 10 weeks. And its flexible, so mothers can take 12 months at 80% salary, and/or start the leave before birth, dads can choose when themselves etc.

We also make like 3 times as much as US workers.

Ooh that scary Socialism sucks, eh?

Elon Musk introduces the TESLA ENERGY POWERWALL

BicycleRepairMan says...

"I'm been very impressed with Tesla as a car company, even though I've never driven or even seen one in person"

I can hardly leave the house without seeing one. Often, on the highway, I have a Tesla in front of me, and one behind. They are everywhere here, as there is 1. Lots of people who are well of, and 2.Lots of tax incentives for electric cars, (and other pros like they can use the Taxi lane) and 3. insanely high gas prices. There is also a supercharger 5 mins from my home, and a dealership 15 minutes away, So I guess that helps I want one..

Swedish cops show NYPD how to subdue people w/ hurting them

BicycleRepairMan says...

"Visibly unarmed, he could have had any weapon you choose in his pockets."
Yes. He could also have planted a nuclear bomb under the cops feet in advance. or be carrying reactive explosives that detonate when shot at. Anything is POSSIBLE. The thing is: Most people, even the ones who are visibly worked up and out of control, are most likely NOT going to try and kill you. Even people who have just murdered two people.

My question is this: Suppose you had 2 cops, cop 1 draws a weapon on every arrest or any situation he/she deems to be potentially dangerous. Cop 2 never draws a weapon, unless the situation is totally out of control. Which cop is most likely to end up in a situation where someone dies or get shot?

Mordhaus said:

Visibly unarmed, he could have had any weapon you choose in his pockets. In that kind of a situation, the officer has to draw and have the weapon ready because of the 21 foot rule. Even having it ready, some people correctly pointed out that he let the suspect get too close to him. If the suspect did have a knife, that officer would likely be dead today if the suspect wanted him to be.

Swedish cops show NYPD how to subdue people w/ hurting them

BicycleRepairMan says...

Norwegian cops dont carry guns, Swedish carry, but I think the bar that they have for actually DRAWING the gun is extremely high. I dont know the statistics in either country, so it is an uninformed and anecdotal impression I get, that US cops seems to draw weapons almost as a default reflex in any situation they deem to be potentially dangerous.

There was a video on here a couple of days ago, where the cop was praised for not shooting the suspect, well that suspect seemed to be unarmed (crazy, and suspected murderer, sure, but still unarmed) What about alternative methods, ie: Talking calmly, trying to defuse the situation etc. before drawing? (Maybe that did happen before the video starts, but it doesnt seem that way)

This is How Good Cops Act: Heroic Officer Refuses to Shoot

BicycleRepairMan says...

Breaking News: Cop does NOT shoot suspect.

While I think its a good thing that he didnt shoot, I'd go even further and complain that he did DRAW a gun. That might have been warranted in this situation, but it seems to be standard practice to draw the gun (accompanied by loud, aggressive shouting) as soon as possible. It seems to me that this tactic is inherently unhelpful on several levels, firstly it makes it much easier to end the situation by trigger-pulling, secondly, but perhaps more importantly, it heightens the tensions and the stakes. Someone who has a gun drawn on them will intutively react with a form of panic. This combination is a recipe for a lethal ending.

Naturally, I understand the fact that the police has a dangerous job, and sometimes the threat of lethal force is warranted, but the bar should be high. Very, very high.

Health warning!!! Lemon wedges in your drinks can kill you!

BicycleRepairMan says...

Diseasecausing , fecal and other bacteria are literally EVERYWHERE. They get on to everything we eat and drink, the stuff we touch.. everywhere. They are however pretty harmless in small quantities.

For instance, I'd probably worry more about using an Iphone, and then touching the rim of the glass afterwards. If you wanna get paranoid about it, try microscoping a swab from the glass of your phone touchscreen. thats the dirtiest place on earth.

Our bodies have evolved to live in dirty environments, so dont worry too much about it. wash your hands and do the normal hygiene stuff, and you probably wont die from fecal bacteria.. Just order a strong drink and wait for the alcohol to kill it

Old guy has his opponent EXACTLY where he wants him...

Hmm it seems to me that the "queening" makes the piece VERY powerful, Black makes it across with two pieces, and they should have been be very powerful, but the "queened" pieces have no outs.(ie no white pieces in their lanes to attack).

Awesome one-take fight scene from Daredevil

BicycleRepairMan says...

Its pretty cool that its one shot, it must have been a really hard thing to coordinate and time perfectly, but I thought the majority of punches here REALLY look like obvious fake moviepunches, ie, a punch in the face is a light touch on the shoulder. I know that they ARE movie punches in every movie, obviously, but shooting from the right angle usually hides the cheat. In this shot, i guess they sacrificed that to get it all in one shot, but imo, that killed the realism.

george carlin-the sanctity of life is bullshit

BicycleRepairMan says...

He is not. He is making the point that we made it up. There is a difference. There is no god, we made all that up. Sorry. There is no "sanctity of life" either, its an incoherent phrase that doesnt pass even a shallow honest analysis (as shown in this video)

BUT, and there is a big but, Life is a continuos process, full of degrees and nuances (which, by the way, Carlin makes a point of in the continuation of this clip), and the value of say, a human life, is something that we should estimate on the grounds that we have brains, feelings, relatives, friends and so on.

Saying shit like "Life is Sacred" is both simplistic, hypocritical and complete bullshit. In fact, it is ultimately disrespectful to living creatures whose life should be respected, a point which the ramblings of the anti-abortion team never ceases to illustrate perfectly

Yes, he's making that point. But he also clearly makes the point that there is no such thing as the sanctity of life, that there is no God, etc.

A Chameleon Like No Other

After years of watching hundreds of optical illusions, magic tricks etc , I really thought I was immune to the best possible versions of this kind of stuff, but this one caught me out completely. Absolutely brilliantly done.

I didn't catch it until she lifted her legs. And even worse, its SO obvious once you see it. makes the trick better IMO

Powerless Automatic Wooden Gullwing Gate

BicycleRepairMan says...

That makes the gate even more surpufluos. Most cattle grids dont have fences or gates over them, and they keep the cattle inside and the roads gate-free. This gate is cool from an engineering standpoint, but I dont know what sort of animal its supposed to keep in(or out). an animal that would be light and agile and fearless enough to step on the grid without opening it(like a cat) could easily also traverse that fence. Animals heavy enough to open the gate wouldnt cross a gateless grid either..

BoneRemake said:

The rack you see that the car drives over, the bridge itself that is - IS in fact a Cattle gate.

I will privledge you with learning about them here :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cattle_grid

A cattle grid – also known as a stock grid in British English; cattle guard in American English; vehicle pass, Texas gate, stock gap in the U.S. Southeast;[1] or a cattle stop in New Zealand English – is a type of obstacle used to prevent livestock, such as sheep, cattle, pigs, horses, or mules from passing along a road or railway which penetrates the fencing surrounding an enclosed piece of land. It consists of a depression in the road covered by a transverse grid of bars or tubes, normally made of metal and firmly fixed to the ground on either side of the depression, such that the gaps between them are wide enough for animals' legs to fall through, but sufficiently narrow not to impede a wheeled vehicle or human foot. This provides an effective barrier to animals without impeding wheeled vehicles, as the animals are reluctant to walk on the grates.
