Art and literature generally seem much more concerned about the aesthetics of something, while geekdom seems more concerned about concrete information, performance etc. Of course the lines blur, like all things, comic books, mac users, etc.

There are a few things I can tolerate, even like at Chili's. But anytime they try to get 'fancy' it invariably comes out like crap. Applebee's in my experience is just plain bad.
I think TYT is overreacting to how much of a flub was made here. The key is involvement level, which wasn't addressed by McCain, and the rest of the hurumpfing is based on speculation of what the meant.

You're making the assumption they think before they act. It has been my experience that people with bi-polar in a manic phase have very little impulse control, its not so much a choice they make as an inability.
You seem to be under the impression the girl's brother is offering excuses and asking for sympathy, maybe he is, but it is my impression, more than anything, he's looking to spread understanding. Why understanding, understanding that she isn't just a thug, she doesn't act like that for the joy of it. Understanding that in order for her to become a functioning productive member of society she needs help in the way of therapy and medication.
And I will tell you this, being beaten or tossed in prison does absolutely nothing to actually help/reform these people, if anything it makes them much much worse. Met with violence they are much more likely to respond in kind, with little regard for their own safety let alone others.
And the whole frustration the families face is they can't get the person the help they need. By law they have no right to force the person into any mental institution, and even if they're willing services are very expensive, especially good services. Most government run "free" facilities won't take people unless they're so bat-shit insane at any moment they're liable to kill themselves or someone else.
So what do you do? Ignore it, throw them all in jail over and over again as they continuously repeat their offenses?

I've almost never seen this, more often than not it's a lack of an apostrophe I notice, which I chalk up to being lazy. On occasion I find my self adding 's to the ends of words they don't belong to, neither expressing possession, or incorrect usage of plural, but as a contraction that is only part of my vernacular and not official English. Of course at this moment can't think of what I use it with, when or why. Just one of those things that happens.
Also it seems like a lot of the accusations you level against meat production can also be applied to veggie and fruit production.
Like with cows, large tracts of land are cleared (deforested) to make room for production. Many veggies and fruits are genetically modified or breed so they produce larger edible parts, have a longer growing period, and are more resistant to certain diseases. In order to ensure a healthy crop they're sprayed with pesticides, fertilizer, and in some cases herbicides (to de-weed framing plots), all of which have extremely aversive effects on the environment. Further more like various livestock fruits and veggies are breed and cultivated with production, shipment, and profit in mind, not the nutritional value or taste.
I have had the advantage of having grown up with parents who planted their own garden annually, so i am both privileged and cursed to know the difference between home grown tomatoes, broccoli, potatoes, cantaloupe, oranges etc etc over the crap I find in the grocery store. Like meat products fruits and veggies sold commercially are lacking in both flavor and nutritional value of the fresh 'home' variety.
As far as getting sick, over the years there have been a large number of recalls and warnings about various fruits and veggies being contaminated by salmonella, or some other horrible bacterial agent. There's one going on right now over jalapenos, it was tomatoes until those were cleared.
Its how the industry is run, meat or veggie. I don't mind if people are vegans or not, the choices you make are yours to make, but before you go claiming moral high ground you better start checking the back side of your own britches for a few 'stains'.
I'd like to see both industries undergo some major reform, even if it does end up making the cost of food go up. As it is there are many food items meat and veggie, I don't buy because the quality is crap at best. Unfortunately I'm stuck having to compromise my sense of taste for quality, because there isn't much of a fresh foods market where I live, and I don't have the capacity to grow/raise my own.
