The Alligator of BJJ - Ronaldo "Jacare" de Souza

Ronaldo de Souza is a talented grappler and MMA fighter. I'm not sure where he got the nickname of Jacare, or Alligator, but he has a trademark victory dance that he does in imitation of his namesake animal that you can see him perform at the end of the video. Jacare placed 2nd in the 2005 Abu Dhabi Combat Championship Absolute division (no weight limit), and has a mixed martial art fight record of 4-1.

Jacare was forced to leave his home at age 14 to escape a criminal history. He went to live with his brother, who happened to train judo as a hobby, and began training judo at age 16. Jacare soon took up Brazilian jiu-jitsu and began competing actively. Jacare is considered to be one of the most well-rounded champion grapplers due to his experience in both judo and BJJ (he has a black belt in both), and it shows in his excellent ability to capitalize off throws to gain superior ground positions and submissions. He also has a wicked flying triangle.

The most amazing part of this highlight video begins at 2:20, with clips from Jacare's fight against Roger Gracie, another one of the world's best BJJ fighters, in the 2004 BJJ World Championships. Roger catches Jacare's left arm in a tight armbar from the guard and begins to apply pressure. Jacare pulls out and away, forcing Roger to move to a belly-down position, and tries to pull his arm out. Roger holds on, and manages to hyperextend Jacare's elbow before Jacare can escape. After pulling out of the sub, Jacare stands up, tucks his nearly-broken left arm into his belt, crouches down, and prepares to continue the fight. Jacare, with one arm, manages to fight Roger off and win the match on points.

Jacare is a true example of warrior spirit and an inspiration to watch.
