Warranties - You Know What's Bullsh*t!?

Never - Ever Purchase in-store warranty.
In-store warranty is just a gimmick add-on sale (and cash-grab)for the store. 99% of the time, the product's own warranty or the general store policy covers any defect or incidental damage to may occur.

Don't waste your money!

if the warranty says that it covers the bulb (in writing), then he should take them to small claims court requesting the value of a replacement bulb, or value he paid for warranty + interest. hiring a lawyer would be more expensive than most bulbs, so he'd just have to represent himself.

Warranty, replacement, and service plans can all be different and do different things. I used to work at a national computer retailer that made most of it's profit off various replacement and warranty programs so I've dealt with them quite a bit.

In my experience, in store warranty programs are no different than the manufacturer ones, and people tended to buy them for 2 or 3 years on items that only had a 1 year or less manufacturer warranty. The good ones would extend off the end of the manufacturer warranty, the bad ones would just overlap with it (theyd have redundant coverage the first year).

Replacement plans however can be quite useful and even beneficial. The company I worked for actually had to change it's policy for employees because it felt the system was too easy to game for us at discounted prices. The beauty of these is that they DO tend to cover accidental damage or wear and tear, which most warranties wont. They are usually short, 1 or 2 years and can be pricey if they cover stuff like screens or battery replacement.

Depending on your honesty or luck, replacement plans can be a way to replace or even upgrade your items for a modest price (for example I get an old headset replaced through a plan but I end up with a newer headset, and i just pay another $10 or so to cover the new set...rinse and repeat every couple of years).

For the few years I worked at that retailer, I was able to keep almost all of my hardware up to date for 10-50 bucks a piece every couple of years (at that time it included stuff like my video card and optical drives)!

Most stuff, I'd agree the warranty is probably useless. My only real hang up on saying it's bullshit in all circumstances is televisions. They have so many things that can wrong with them, but not be completely broken or unusable that the warranty can be handy, plus it's cost a fortune to ship something big like a TV.

Speakers might be similar since they tend to be heavy, but TVs with dead pixels and what not.. the in-store warranty's or third party warranty's have a decent chance of saving you from being stuck with a TV with a weird spot on the screen that doesn't quite fit the dead pixel count policy of the MFG.

Laptops would be the second, but only if you are buying a really expensive gaming laptop. The ones that run just short of catching on fire heat wise...because components cant' hold up to that kind of heat. So you're pretty much guaranteed a new computer under the warranty if you use it a lot and are a little negligent on keeping it on a cooling pad or keeping dust out of out. Plus they get phased out so fast, 2-3 years down the line you'll be getting a pretty significant upgrade more than likely.

Instead of buying these in-store warranties, if you think you need this type of service, setup a 'replacement fund' piggy bank. Instead of paying these $5/month to that store, put it in the piggy bank. If you need a replacement, you have money saved. If you didn't need a replacement, you just saved a bunch of money.

in general I would agree that the vast majority of the time those warranties are bullshit.

But it did pay off for me with some klipsch speakers I bought a long time ago. just before the 3 years were up, they fizzled out. took them into the store with the warranty, got a free set of brand new model speakers no muss no fuss.

It also depends what country you're in. Here in Australia we have some of the best consumer protection laws in the world. Warranties are a statutory condition of sale. If something breaks that reasonably shouldn't have then it is they'll replace it or suffer massive fines. You don't even have to go to court to claim for it, the ACCC take care of it all for you.
